I’m in a different industry, but we run into a similar version with customers who want a yard cleaned immediately before an event, move-out, party, inspection, or because the yard finally got out of control.
The biggest thing I’ve learned is that not every urgent customer can become an emergency for the business.
If every last-minute call gets inserted into the schedule, the whole route starts paying for it.
Your current customers get delayed.
Your team gets stretched.
The quality can slip.
The owner ends up working late to save the day.
I think the answer has to be a mix of policy, pricing, and triage.
A Friday afternoon call from someone with an active wasp nest by the front door may need a different response than someone who has had ants for 3 weeks and suddenly wants it handled today.
Same-day service should probably cost more too.
If it disrupts the route, extends the day, or requires after-hours work, the price should reflect that. Otherwise, the business trains customers that last-minute urgency gets rewarded at the same price as planned service.
I’d also consider building emergency capacity into the schedule intentionally.
The key is deciding before the phone rings.
If you’re making the decision while the customer is stressed, it’s easy to overpromise.
Emergency calls can be great revenue, but they need boundaries. Otherwise, the business owner becomes the buffer for every customer’s poor timing.
