How Do You Deal with Limited Supplier Options and Monopolized Supply Chains?

When it comes to pesticides in Ontario, there aren't too many suppliers that I can get my products from and it really sucks! I have 2 choices basically and a few smaller guys who are basically just resellers from those 2 main distributers. It gives me that feeling like they can just charge whatever they want.

Can you source what you need for your trade openly or do you feel like you're buying from a monopolized supply chain?

  • Limited supplier options definitely put a business in a tough spot because there is only so much negotiating power when everyone is buying from the same source.

I would probably focus on the areas I can control: comparing total costs between suppliers, buying ahead when pricing is favorable, and keeping enough margin in my pricing to absorb increases without taking a loss. I would also keep relationships with the smaller suppliers even if they are resellers. Sometimes service, availability, or flexibility can still make them worth having as a backup.

I also agree that customers may need to understand that certain material costs are simply part of what it takes to provide the service properly.

I don't necessarily have this problem so take my thoughts with a grain of salt but I've recently started viewing job costs as "this is what it takes for me, my team, and what we have in our arsenal to get this job done". If a customer doesn't like your bid because it includes making a profit on an overpriced supplier, so be it.

This would be a problem I would work on as a side project but I wouldn't stress out if you can't solve it this week. This would be like a handyman working in Los Angeles with crazy traffic. If someone calls you in from across town and wants a job, you'd have to charge for gas and some time because it's going to take you forever to get there. If they think that's too high, then it doesn't make sense to do it.

I'd rather sit at home and make no money then work all day at your house and make no money. I think your problem kind of falls in to that. Maybe the solution is to build value in the products to your perspective customers and convey why you have to charge more.
