Should I purchase a van or truck for my company?

I am looking at a potential second vehicle for my electrical company.

I have always thought trucks were the way, I started in the oilfield 20 years ago and that all there was. So now I am trying to decide on the potential benefits of a van.

It seems easier to manage and control tools and material, but seems like it may be a large vehicle to handle, especially the height.

Curious to hear about your past experiences!

We currently have a pickup with a tonneau cover, one with a cap and bed slide, a 12 foot cube truck and 2 vans. From here on out, it's vans only.

Pickups are great because everyone works on em, they're comfy, look sharp and fit in most garages, car washes etc

Box truck is so easy to build out, it's a big plywood box. But it's rough on gas, uncomfortable, doesn't fit anywhere, only truck mechanics can fit them in their garage, and the back is hard to get in and out of.

Vans are the perfect go between! Comfy, fit more places than the box (tho still no carwashes around me), and better on gas than the box truck. Easy to step in and out, and if you get racking done, you can still fit full sheets standing up.

  • We have a 9' van and love it! It's tall and does mean you can't pull into most garages, but if that's not an issue for your location (isn't really where we are), then I think it's the better option. We sourced an old amazon van which had built in shelving and makes it nice for organizing our supplies.

I have always bought trucks for my painting business, but have often thought of buying a van. One advantage of a van over a truck is that you can organize your space in more space than you can with a truck. Though for storage of your bigger ladders, you would still need to have them outside in the elements (rain, snow, etc.) I still have a truck (Honda Ridgeline) which is a very nice truck

  • I have a truck and 7x14 trailer for my cabinetry and finish carpentry work. But I am looking into switching to a van and saving the trailer for install days. Parking the trailer in tight neighborhoods isn’t always fun.

I have been looking at some type of a topper with a sled/pull out with tool boxes. Something to keep material and tools out of the elements but also not something that is covered in layers of junk.

I am thinking the van route is looking best based on what you all have to say.
