How do you get started with woodworking as a complete beginner?

Hello everyone, it is nice to meet you and to be here.

I am looking for advice on where and how to get started with woodworking projects.

I have so many ideas that I want to create but I am literally at the beginning.

Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • Start with something simple first.  Build something basic and boxy first, like a workbench, tool tote, or garden bed.  You'll need to get some basic tools.  You don't need big power tools. Start with:

    • Tape Measure & Speed Square (for straight lines)
    • Miter Box & Hand Saw (for straight cuts)
    • Cordless Drill (for pilot holes and screws)
    • Wood Glue & 2 Clamps
    • Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)

When selecting your wood, start cheap!  Buy standard pine 2x4s and 1x4s from the hardware store. It's cheap, soft, and easy to work with.

If you need some instruction or to see how a pro does it you can check out this media

Steve Ramsey (YouTube): Watch his channel "Woodworking for Mere Mortals" for basic-tool tutorials.

Ana White (Website): Great source for free, beginner-friendly build plans.

    Good luck, you got this!!!

  • Amazing! Getting started is the hardest part. Get yourself tooled up and like Travis said, start with something small and easy. You'll gain confidence and eventually want to take on some bigger projects.

  • YouTube might be helpful or someone with the nolage and patience to teach u
