Do Electrical Contractors own a business or job?

A lot of guys say they “work for themselves.”

But when I ask who controls their schedule — it’s the customer.
When I ask what happens if they take a day off — the work stops.
And if they stop answering the phone — the leads disappear.

That’s not a business.
That’s a job with more pressure.

I built this visual because I lived it.
The truth is: most contractors don’t own their time, they just own the stress.

So I came to the conclusion: If you stop working and your income stops too…
You don’t own a business ... you just own your own job.

How do you guys feel about that ?

  • Value your time.  As trades people we can easily de value our time compared to a dentist for example, but a dentist rarely drops his schedule to take care of your cavity.  so its important to value your work time as important and set time aside for family time. Its easy to get sucked into working all hours to get more done, but areas such as invoicing tend to fall short. Then so does your bank account.

  • This it so true very easy to fall into the groove of being reactive to calls and showing your promptness to get to a job when you should be spending time elsewhere to grow.  just schedule that customer in so they wait just like the next one.

So what do you recommend to do?

How do you shift from reactive to proactiveness?
