How do I transition from handyman work to running a licensed contracting business?
I've been a handyman for almost 10 years, been doing work on my own home/apts since I was a teenager. I just kind of picked it up one day and haven't stopped learning since. The last several years, I've gotten myself into doing electrical and hvac for my own house, learning the tricks of the trades, buying equipment and learning how to use them. Installing my own electrical and mini splits. Alongside building walls, adding structural supports, and doing all of it through the process of permitting every step of the way. I've also been wood working semi professionally for around 6 years, installing cabinets, building cabinets, flooring, bookshelves, etc, all from rough sawn wood in my little workshop.
I decided to take it up a notch and apply for my Class C Contractors license in VA so I could do bigger jobs for others and really start my contractors business and get away from my 8-5 desk job. While I'll probably get a Class B in the next few years, I want to at least get some bigger jobs under my belt and really focus on getting a crew together to do these C jobs, before moving up.
Excited to find jobber to connect with others and learn more about others experiences and how they've scaled their own businesses.
