How Do Solopreneurs Actually Disconnect and Take Time Off?

I am planning a few small getaways with my family this year and find it really hard to put my phone down and really disconnect when on vacation.

The only solution I could come up with to give myself some sanity is to not take leads on a week before the trip, message my trouble customers well ahead of time and let them know the dates I will be gone, and also make my vacation about quality rather than quantity.

If I would spend $2000 for my whole family on a flight and 5 or 6 day stay stay in a decent place, I would rather spend that on a really nice place closer to home, and for less days.

Do you find it hard to get away?

I mean ultimately you're going to have to take time off. Especially if you have a family. For those of us that don't, I just to a few days off for a break at a time. If you want to take a trip somewhere, work your tail off to make your organization run without you. I was able to go to brazil for more than a month, manage everything through Jobber but I had someone dependable to answer the phones, and technicians to execute the job. The key is really planning.

Reality for most of us is it will be a mix of working and time off and we just have to be ok with that until you have the right systems/ team in place.

Oooo tough one man... you are looking for balance and I just don't know if it exists. Could you bring in another pest contractor to work for you during these days? Like a sub contractor potentially. Forward your phone to them and forget about it...

  • I've set up the business to be flexible, at least one weekday is not scheduled for me, so I don't mind the occasional weekend, evening, or vacation call. I also have partners who can pick up where I leave off.
