How many long weekends do you actually get?

First off, Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian friends out there!

I am wondering how many of us are going to be working tomorrow? How many long weekends do you usually take in a year? Is there a weekend or holiday that you will always take off each year?

For me, Canada Day and Remberance Day are the only two days in a year that I would ABSOLUTELY say no to taking a call. No amount of money could get me out those days.

For me, I have a family with two small kids, and we take an insane amount of time off from work.

I have a standing agreement with my wife that I work all stat holidays.

For instance, I'm working today, but next week I'll be taking Thursday and Friday off because we're going to Great Wolf Lodge. I don't need to take random stat holidays off to sit around the house when I'm already taking off many, many other days that I choose.

  • I think one of the real benefits of being a business owner is having the flexibility to choose when to take time off. But that flexibility works best when you plan for it.

One idea is to schedule something each quarter as a personal reset. It doesn't have to be a vacation. It could be a long weekend or simply a day away from work to recharge.

Identify those dates at the beginning of the year. Schedule work around them and put systems in place so business continues without you.

Taking time off shouldn't always mean waiting for a holiday. Sometimes you need to create your own.

I'm curious. How many business owners actually schedule time to recharge each quarter?
