Is your busy season coming or is it coming to an end?

I think we are all reeling at the thought of summer coming to an end, and the inevitable onslaught of fall and winter. I think about all the businesses that thrive in these transitional times, but would love to hear about some of the businesses that most people wouldn't think have a either a busy time or slow time in these times. Locksmiths, cleaners, reno companies, pooper scoopers... Also would love to hear why.

Is your season picking up or slowing down?

Summer historically is our worst time of the year for churn with people being outside more often or traveling so they don't need us to clean their yards. With school starting up, most of our busy parents no longer have their scooper available (their children) so we're seeing a big uptick in leads coming in again :)

      Yay!! ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿš€

  • A little bit of both?

My partner is an electrician based in Hawaii and all four seasons (well... for them it feels like one solid summer) are typically pretty busy.
He mostly works on new commercial buildings from the ground up so his work days are weather dependant.
In recent years, we've noticed longer and wetter winter seasons that have delayed many of their projects. For example, last year we've experienced hurricanes and flash floods - pushed back one of his projects 2-3 months because it took forever for the job site to fully dry.

So is his busy season coming to an end or just beginning? Only Mother Nature can tell ๐Ÿ˜…

Crazy busy pretty much all year around.  Our slowest time is after the holidays - January tends to be a hit and miss.  We ask our team to take time off if they can.  For now we have been turning work away just because hiring is super challenging.

For us in residential cleaning, fall usually starts picking up again after summer vacations settle down. Then the holiday stretch gets busy because people want their homes guest-ready and schedules get less flexible.

The interesting part is that โ€œbusy seasonโ€ isnโ€™t always just more leads โ€” it can also mean more reschedules, PTO, sickness, weather issues, and clients wanting specific dates. So operationally, Q4 can feel busier than the revenue alone shows.

Our recurring clients help smooth out seasonality quite a bit, but the holidays definitely create a different kind of pressure than summer.

  • Gutter cleaning companies get a nice bump right about now that people don't think about until the leaves actually start falling and clog everything up. Same with chimney sweeps, nobody thinks about their fireplace until the first cold snap hits and suddenly everyone wants it inspected at once. On the flip side, pool services slow right down obviously, but a lot of them pivot into winterizing and covers which keeps some revenue trickling in instead of going dead for four months. Funny how the shoulder seasons end up being busier for some trades than the seasons they're named after.

Summer is ending here, and we're in the Florida Panhandle.  So vacation rentals are plentiful and they're our main source of income.  So it gets very slow in the "off season" We're still working on building a solid cusotmer base since moving here from Arkansas where we had an established business.  We do appliance repair.  This is the time of year I try to push maintenance such as cleaning condesor coils, cleaning out dryers, dryer vent cleanings and installs for remodels and such.

  • Seasonal changes can impact businesses in ways that're nโ€™t always easy to see. For instance cleaning and home-maintenance services often get busier when people start getting ready for weather. Renovation companies may see work too since homeowners want to finish projects before winter sets in. Even locksmiths can see a rise in activity when people move, lock up homes or prepare vacation properties for the off-season. I believe the main thing is knowing what customers usually need during each shift, in season.

  • Real estate development does not really have a traditional busy season. Different parts of the process pick up at different times. Warmer months are better for site work and construction while colder months can be used for research, planning and lining up the next project. There is always something that needs to move forward.
