How Do Solo Operators Find Reliable On-Call Help When Jobs Get Too Big to Handle Alone?

I would like a better way to keep track of my time.

Since I ran in one person operation with occasional aside helper, I sometimes get overloaded with jobs. I think I can do.

As a small one person handyman type jobs. I may get out on a job and find its way too much for one person and then I have to stop and try to find someone to help me.

So I’ve tried using workers day workers and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. But whatever I’m looking for as far as parts, I know I can go to Home Depot and find what I need so I always depend on Home Depot and now I just need a way to find a reliable worker that is willing to be on call.

  • On call help is difficult unless you have a pool to call from. We have hiring posters in our city both in english and spanish and they passively collect applicants, they let them know we aren't hiring but will save them for later and when we have work i sms blast them. we post them in bus stops, local supply houses, yard signs, all with permission of course, doesnt replace active hiring but it helps massively improve passive recruitment.

oh and we also pin the hiring post to our instagram and fb pages, currently we use scan2apply for all this.

Have you tried posting on hiring boards that you're looking to hire an "on call" type of technician? I know on my local Facebook groups I always see people asking for part time work. Indeed has been helpful for us as well.

I completely understand. When you are running a one person operation, it can be really difficult to know when a job will turn out to be more than you can handle alone. Having one or two reliable workers you can call when needed would definitely make things easier. Day workers can be hit or miss, so finding someone dependable who’s willing to stay on call sounds like a much better solution.
