None of the locals have any pricing on their websites. As a customer I hate searching for general pricing. I'm considering posting my trip fee and pricing for some of the more common tasks a handyman would do. Tough to do for more custom jobs or problematic installs, but it seems that letting a customer know up front that replacing a basic ceiling fan is $99 labor may save them, and me, some time. Thoughts?
We designed an F.A.Q. page on our website to answer a lot of those "pricing/estimate" questions customers love to ask. It's been very helpful over the years and it's easy enough to change if you adjust your pricing.

I like the format you used for the Q&A on the website. Definitely adds transparency and shows that you are set apart from a contractor that may ghost them.
I have thought about doing the same to weed out the "tire kickers" looking for the cheapest alternative. That way, I think, I will be responding to qualified clients and won't spend time chasing jobs that don't want to pay for quality work.
I don't disagree. I have a lot of my pricing available on my website. I am just starting out, so this does not mean I'm right.
I think it can eliminate the tire kickers. It can scare some people away but maybe they were not your ideal customer either.

I agree to having certain prices listed, such as a base price for installation, but I'm doing a price list you must always inform that prices may vary according to the job. Example would be , changing a faucet in a 1 year old house where the lines and cut off valves are new, probably won't need to be replaced as apposed to a 30 year old house that the faucet never been replaced, will probably need new field lines and cut off valves. So listing prices can be good for certain jobs as a base , but needs to be determines by the situation
I am not afraid to list base prices and give customers base prices over the phone. It does save time and can speed up the process in lots of cases.
I just recently moved from South TX to Phoenix, AZ. I am attempting to continue my handy man business here, but have come to understand that there is a world of difference when it comes to pricing. There is this potential client who needs a bathtub removed and wants a regular shower instead. The job requires tub removal, not disposal, because the want to keep it and make a garden tub. Tile removal and installation, and a glass door installed. What would be a good price to charge?
Well Im not sure about AZ but are you licensed as a plumber? Were i am, larger job are considered remodeling and requires a contractors license. and if not licensed with a plumbers license, you can do everything else as a handyman. Pricing should be hourly or by the job? I worked with a friend doing remodeling and that job would have been about $3k ( if the shower was tiled) you have to account for removal of all the demo, clean up, trim after tile.
I agree to disagree because mostly every job I have ever worked on something is different and it’s not fair for the contractor nor the homeowner to charge 100$ but then I’m stuck because the other wires don’t work. Or I come to fix it and just the light bulb ir something dumb was going on.
I understand your logic of that, but if you don't have a base price to go off of, your only hurting yourself, what is your time worth? For me if i set a price ( even if it ended up being harder) i don't change my price. Mechanics work off a book time, ( I used to do that also) If the book time says 3 hours to change a part, that's what you charged, now if your skills let you finish in a hour and a half, should you be paid less for being better at your job? Set prices help for a base, if the job was easier, say you would give them a " percentage off" which makes them happy and still makes you money. I believe in always helping others the best I can, doing the job the best to my knowledge, but also reminding myself why I'm doing this job, right? Because for me, paying for all the licenses required, insurance, advertising, logos, shirts , all the materials to make a business run PLUS making a salary isn't cheap, lol
I can definitely understand where you are coming from I think the main purpose why pricing isn't a one price fits all is because there are so many variables.
