As a fellow electrician who walked away to start a lawn care business, your post caught my eye. Honestly, if I’d found a job offering $175k with those benefits back then, I probably would’ve never started my own business!
But here’s the perspective from the other side: I chose lawn care for the flexibility and freedom, not just the money. For years, I felt overqualified and stuck in a boring routine where every day was the same old thing, usually while answering to a boss who knew less than I did.
One thing that would keep me away regardless of the pay is the schedule. You couldn’t pay me enough to work 'oil field' hours or rotating day/evening/night shifts. Working crazy hours and being away from family just isn't worth it at the end of the day. If your roles involve that kind of rotation or out-of-town work, that might be exactly why you aren't finding the talent.
I started my own business because I was bored, I wanted challenges, autonomy, and wanted to be sleeping in my own bed every night and have breakfast with my family in the mornings. That what makes my life happy, not crazy money with crazy hours.
