Are your kids employed by your business?

We have three kids and two are teenagers. I own a cleaning company and while they can’t work onsite, I do believe there are office-related and inventory-related tasks that could make them eligible for payroll. Have you done this? What are the pros and cons?

  • i own a pressure washing company, and I do employ my kids on jobsites, and it's fine by law in my state, so I would check with your local and state labor laws first, to be sure

I’ve tried paying my kids for admin work, but they rarely get past the starting line. It’s a good idea in theory, but in practice I usually end up doing the tasks anyway.

  • I start my kids at 10 for certain jobs. The older ladies are more likely to give the crew treats when kids are working hard. Two of mine got fired the first two years and didn't make a good hand until 12. I like to start training them at home starting at five. Small chores that pay and I start telling that they can have things for however much it costs almost every time they ask for something. We also do volunteer work with our youth group so I always have some trained teenagers around working.

  • Yes! Speak to your accountant then financial planner. The kids can be paid a certain amount that provide benefits for you and them. Then get them with your financial planner to get them set up teaching them working, your business, savings and investments. Do this while they're at this age and they'll thank you someday.

This is amazing advice, thank you. Each state has its own rules. We have a 15 year old and he really enjoys being a part of the business operations and some tasks.

  • Commenting to follow along. Mine is only a little over 2 at this point, but curious if anyone has utilized their little ones for "modeling" or the like. I know there are some tax benefits there...

  • My immediate family is my biggest support system and staff in the beginning. Both my boys are full grown men now in careers of their own my oldest is a logistics data analyst and my youngest is a l business development executive in the field of logistics . As boys, they did everything with me from handing our business cards to crawling under houses to actual installation of satellites camera systems, but all I could do was put a good foundation in them for them to build on because both of them told me Pops we love you and we like the work you do but we gotta find something else! And I could only respect their opinions and support them 100%. I’m a proud papa.

  • I wanted to hire my teen to do social media for me but after awhile he wasnt interested and was more hassel than help

  • I keep offering my 19 year old a job. She'd be so very good at walk-throughs. At least she's really good at pointing out all the things that I need to do around our own house!!
