How to Get Your Spouse to Help Support You and Your Business?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice. I run a small business, and I pour a lot of time and energy into it. You know, calls, ads, everything! My wife, though, feels frustrated when I’m not available for what she wants when she wants it. I get that balance is key, but I’m not sure how to get her on board. How do some of you manage to get your spouse or partner to support your business journey? She has even told me at times to get a job, so it shows she doesn't understand what I am doing. I’d love to hear what’s worked for you—or even what hasn’t!

I’d love for her to be part of the business more—ideally, I’d like her to handle admin one day. I want us to build this together, so she knows the ins and outs—bringing in leads, closing them—so that the success stays in the family. But I’m not sure how to get her excited about that. Anyone had luck getting your spouse to see the dream and want to jump in?

PS: Background info, I used to be an RN but created a service business to be happy. It was either become one of those Jaded Nurses or leave and create something I will enjoy and still get to help people.

I think a lot of times it isn’t that they don’t believe in you. They don’t have the same information you do. They see the long hours, the stress, and the bills. You see the vision.

For me, I’ve learned that trust grows when people can actually see progress. Not just hear another big idea. Small wins. Real results. Those speak a lot louder than promises ever will.

Well said. As entrepreneurs, we often see the destination before anyone else does. The challenge is staying consistent enough that others can start seeing the path too. Progress has a way of turning skeptics into believers.

I think communication and patience are huge when it comes to building a business with your spouse. Starting a business can be exciting for the entrepreneur, but for the other person it can sometimes feel like uncertainty, especially when they see the long hours and sacrifices before they see the results.

One thing that can help is bringing them into the vision—not just asking them to help with tasks, but showing them the “why” behind what you’re building and what the future could look like for your family. At the same time, making sure there is a healthy balance between business time and family time is important because your relationships are part of the success too. I respect that you left a career that was burning you out to create something that still allows you to help people. That same passion that pushed you to start your business can be something you share with your spouse. Sometimes people don’t believe in the dream until they can see the plan, the progress, and how they fit into it.

Wishing you success on both building your business and keeping your family strong through the journey.
