One lesson we've learned as a growing handyman business is that "just one quick thing" can unintentionally create future expectations.
We love going above and beyond for our customers, but we've realized that when extra work is completed without documenting it or communicating it to the office, it can create confusion later. The customer naturally assumes those extras are included every time, while the person scheduling, quoting, and managing future work has no idea what was done.
Now, if we choose to provide a courtesy, we make sure it's communicated and documented. That way everyone stays on the same page, expectations remain clear, and we're still able to surprise customers with exceptional service when it makes sense.
Strong boundaries don't mean caring less. They mean creating consistent experiences for your customers and a sustainable process for your team.
Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way?
