Restarting a 25-Year Landscape Business in a New City — Best Marketing Strategies Today?

Hello everyone,

I have owned and operated a landscape and irrigation company for about 25 years. I originally started the business with my brother, who is a landscape architect. We launched the company in a smaller town in Idaho in the late 1990s and it grew quickly thanks to strong word-of-mouth and my brother’s design expertise.

About five years ago I moved to Draper, Utah for another job. Recently I decided to restart the landscape and irrigation company here in my new location. Because our company in Idaho grew with very little advertising, I now find myself a bit behind when it comes to modern marketing and advertising strategies.

One area I recognize as a weakness in my business experience is staying current with the newest and most effective ways to advertise and market a service company. While I have many years of hands-on experience in landscaping and irrigation, I am essentially starting fresh in a new market and looking for the best ways to build a strong customer base.

My background is also in technology. I have a bachelor’s degree in computer software engineering and specialize in website design and e-commerce development. I am currently building a website for the company and have already listed the business on Google Maps.

For those who have grown service businesses in larger metro areas, what marketing strategies have worked best for building a customer base and attracting new clients today? I would really appreciate any advice or insight from others in the industry.

    Thanks, I really appreciate the welcome and the advice.

    What you mentioned makes a lot of sense, especially focusing on Google Business Profile and reviews. That’s definitely something I didn’t have to think about much when we originally built our company back in Idaho, so I’m working on getting up to speed with that now.

    I like the idea of combining digital presence with physical advertising as well. We had great success in the past with simple things like equipment branding and word-of-mouth, so it’s good to hear that those fundamentals still play an important role even in a larger metro area.

    Networking is something I plan to put more effort into this time around. In a smaller town it happened naturally, but here I can see how being intentional about it will make a big difference.

    I’d be interested to hear from others on what specific strategies have worked best for generating consistent leads, especially in competitive areas. Thanks again for the input.

    If you or anyone else thinks of anything additional or has more valuable insight to share, I would really appreciate hearing it.

    Hey Jett 👋 Welcome to the community! And congrats on restarting your landscaping business. 

    Restarting in a new city can definitely feel like a different game compared to your previous location. 

    For many service businesses in larger metro areas, a solid Google Business Profile with reviews and local search visibility will help drive a lot of your leads. I'd look into referral or review incentive strategies to increase your review #s. Pairing that with physical advertisements would also be a good idea. Think truck branding, yard signs, even flyers pinned in local coffee shops (if they allow it). 

    If you're able to network and meet people in your community, that would also be a great idea (as you know from experience, nothing like the word of mouth to get new clients!).

  • Hi, utilize social media such as Facebook, tiktok, and more. That's where you can upload previous jobs you've done so that builds your portfolio,  your name. As people see it, and you engage (update daily) you'll start to gain traction where people could inquire via social media. Also for logo, flyers, use canva that's a pretty good app. Leave flyers, business cards, or a QR code for people to scan with their phone while at the store shopping.
