How Do You Structure and Split a Small Service Business Into Two Separate Crews?
I've been doing handyman work for 2 years when last year I got my GC license and started taking on more remodels, flips, and exteriors work, all while continuing to do handyman work.
I've always been blessed with a great team, and I run the company/money.
I have 2 guys, one that worked for me last year(left on good terms), but took a union job that payed way to much for 9 months, and one is a friend of my favorite guy. They want to come work for me. This would put me at 5 employees. It would be tough to run the way we are now with this many guys.
I'm working on implementing jobbers requests, jobs, job costing, and time clock to streamline those systems. Once I have that, I'd put one guy in charge of estimating and scheduling the handyman crew(3 guys), I could keep estimating and scheduling for contracting work, but have this new(2nd time around) take over running this crew.
Is this a terrible idea, or is this just how it goes?
