How to make profit in a service business?

This year our goal was to be profitable - we did reach this goal.

As a business owner I do have to admit I have shiny object syndrome that I promised my team I will hone in this year. I did this and we did make profit.

How do you ensure that your business is profitable? I know all the general ones like bringing in more revenue, cutting expenses, reviewing your accounting once a month etc, but what was an aha moment for you that helped your bottom line?
