Hiring the right person for growth

Hey everyone, I run a lawn care business that's been growing steadily. I work full time as a firefighter and have two part-time employees, but we’re pretty maxed out on what we can handle right now.
I’m at a crossroads—I need someone I can trust to take on more responsibility, especially when I’m on shift. But I’m also not sure how to afford another employee unless we grow more, and I can’t grow much without that help. Bit of a catch-22.
Any advice on finding someone who could help scale the business? Also open to creative compensation ideas beyond just hourly pay. Appreciate any input!

  • Hi, In my experience (we are a cleaning business) not having employees and having too much work or the other side having too many employees and not enough work is always a fine balance.   There is no right or wrong.  You have to decide how you want to grow.  If you want to keep your firefighter  position you might think of hiring a Virtual Assistant to get the phone/appt etc.  If you need someone in the field how is your current staff?  Would one of them be ok working full time and taking some duties off your shoulder.  Or are you ready to committ full time to your business?

Right now I can't commit full time to the business, which is the ultimate goal, but that's a good idea to look into virtual assistance and I need to find myself a guy who is willing to step into that full time role, as my current employees are unable to fill that position.

Totally get it.  It is hard to make the jump and I am sure you are very dedicated to being a firefighter!!!!!

I agree getting one full time guy sounds like the best idea. Ultimately getting that person a part time employee when the time is right. this gives you less time on truck and more time to find work for these guys/gals

  • What about opening up some volunteer positions for people who may need  community service hours or experience for their resume?
