  • You need to decide what type of culture you want to create in your business. Once you've done that, look for people that would fit best into that culture. Maybe you want a business where everyone is an individual that is looking out for themselves, maybe you want a team environment, maybe you want it to feel more like family. Maybe you want a business that focuses on good communication, maybe you want to be a business that focuses on kindness and giving back, maybe it's efficiency. Whatever you want to value most as a company, you need to find people who fit into that culture. I like my crew to be like a team...we value teamwork and working together to ensure the customer gets the best service. I hired someone as a manager at one point that was the opposite of this. I hired based on experience rather than based on culture. I quickly realized it was a mistake and he poisoned my entire crew. Everyone was looking out for themselves and people didn't care how their actions impacted other employees anymore. I finally was able to let him go and expressed what I was looking for. Unfortunately none of them adjusted well back to the culture we had before, so over the last year we've had to replace everyone. It's a much better environment for the employees, the customers, and for me again. We have been in business nearly 20 years and have won many awards for our service. If you create a good culture, you find good people. I can teach anyone how to do the job, but finding good people with good work ethics is a challenge. When you find them, regardless of the type of culture you want to create, make sure it includes that they know they are appreciated and where every win is a win-win. If you can do that, you won't have to replace people all that often! Good luck!

nostreaking shared such a valuable perspective. Hiring for culture fit over experience alone is something a lot of businesses learn the hard way, and you explained it really well. Thanks for sharing this with the community!
