Residential cleaning businesses specifically in North Carolina. Advice on how to pay W2 employees.

Hi,

Residentail cleaning business here. Looking to hire my first part-time W2 employee.

I have asked this before, but I would like advice from people who are in my state, so the advice can match NC laws,  ideas, and cost of living.

I want to get some advice from other cleaning business owners who have specifically hired W2 employees in North Carolina.

This Jobber community is so large but each state is different when it comes to compensation for their employees.

I am interested in knowing the following:

*Pay Rate per hour(range)

*Travel Time Rate per hour(range)

I think I will just do the IRS mileage Rate, unless someone in NC has another idea that is cost efficient over mileage pay. For the employee driving there own personal vehicle for work.

When I hire the part-time employee they will need to drive their own personal vehicle after training.

Thank you!

I’m not a cleaning business owner or based in North Carolina, but I’ve seen posts asking similar questions online, and a few patterns keep showing up that might help!

    1.  Hourly pay ranges - Many owners determine their starting range by looking at:
      • What the larger local cleaning companies are offering (I'd suggest joining local business or cleaning business groups and network)
      • The minimum they need to maintain margins after labor burden (taxes, workers comp, etc.)
      • Whether the role is solo cleaning or team-based
    2.  Travel time
      • Pay travel time at a reduced hourly rate, or
      • Use the standard IRS mileage rate (like you mentioned), especially when employees use their own vehicles.
    3. Compliance & clarity
Since W2 rules vary by state, I'd recommend checking NC’s specific guidelines on reimbursing travel and ensuring the rate doesn’t dip below minimum wage when accounting for drive time.

Hoping some NC-based cleaning owners can jump in with the exact ranges they’re using, but wanted to share what I’ve seen others do to give you a starting point!
