Seeking Advice on Hiring – Best Practices?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently exploring the best way to approach hiring for my business, Mr. Backflow. As things grow, I’m finding it challenging to balance hands-on service with the increasing demand — and I want to make sure I bring someone on in a way that’s smart, sustainable, and aligned with my brand.

I’d love to hear from those of you who’ve hired technicians or field staff:

  • What worked well for you when hiring your first employee?
  • Did you use a recruiter, job board, or referrals?
  • Any tips on onboarding, training, or setting expectations?

I’m especially interested in keeping the quality of service high while making sure the person fits our customer-first, community-driven approach.

Appreciate any insights or stories you’re willing to share!

  • MrBackflow this is an amazing time when your business starts to grow and you are able to think of hirining someone new.  What worked well for us is to develop our core values and hire based on these values.  We use Indeed to hire.  My experience is when our job ad is up I monitor as much as I can. We have developed some qualifying questions like - do you have a car? Are you available from 9-5 Mon through Fri? ETC.  Then if they don't answer within 48 hours we decline their applications.  We do a video interview about 20 min and if we like them we bring them in for an in person interview.   As for training we use Trainual and we have created videos.  Once they do their first day in the office watching all the videos then training in the field.  Hope this helps.
