I instantly looked at this from the other side, from the employee side.
I worked 3 jobs in the last decade that did 3 completely different things when it came to a company vehicle...
The first company let us use the truck for personal use, no questions asked. Even gave us a gas card we could use anytime. We all looked at it as a huge bonus every year, and every single one of us abused this. Some guys used the gas card to fill their wife's car, do side jobs on the weekends or take long hauls to the cottage. I never understood why they did this but the guys were so happy to have it. It did create a feeling sometimes that we felt like we were on the clock 24/7.
The second company, we all paid $225 a month to use the vehicle for personal use anytime we wanted. Gas, insurance, mileage included.
The third, we took the truck home with us but it was it was not to move outside of work hours. I would get a report every morning about truck movement after 5pm (I was management). Some guys were pissed that they had to pay to park a second vehicle that they could only use for work. Everyone hated this.
I would say as an employee, obviously, I was the happiest with the truck that was no questions asked mine to use as I wanted but it was a horrible waste of money for the company. Now, as a business owner I think the $225 a month model makes the most sense!
When I am at the point where I am buying a vehicle for an employee, I don't want to have the burden of watching over every move that truck makes, and don't want to pay for gas going to a cottage or the grocery store. I would add a charge each month or deducted off a weekly pay to use that vehicle for personal use within reason.
