How to Get Your Spouse to Help Support You and Your Business?

I think a lot of times it isn’t that they don’t believe in you. They don’t have the same information you do. They see the long hours, the stress, and the bills. You see the vision.

For me, I’ve learned that trust grows when people can actually see progress. Not just hear another big idea. Small wins. Real results. Those speak a lot louder than promises ever will.

One thing I’ve learned is that getting your spouse involved may work better when you stop asking them to see the dream exactly the way you do and instead give them a meaningful role that fits who they are.

I still handle most of the day-to-day work while balancing a full-time job, but my wife is strategically important to our business. She handles our phone calls using a clear process we developed together, and she is excellent at creating a warm first impression. Customers hear a different voice and perspective, which makes the business feel larger, more personal, and less dependent on only me.

I remind her that every call she handles well is more than an administrative task—it can create another opportunity for our family and another chance to serve a customer exceptionally well. That connection between her contribution, our family’s future, and the customer experience has helped make her involvement feel purposeful.

I don’t think a spouse can be pressured into sharing the same enthusiasm. Sometimes support grows when they are trusted with real responsibility, allowed to use their own strengths, and shown that their contribution genuinely matters.

Hello fellow entrepreneur. There is not a blanket answer for this question. Too much relies on so much that we cannot know, from your post.

so I will speak from my personal experience.

my wife, has primarily been a stay at home mom, but has worked in sales from time to time. My wife, feels secure in repetition, so steady paychecks provided that.

i did experience this friction temporarily. What I did, was open a business account and paid myself a regular salary. If there was excess, I did not increase my salary, though if the excess persists, I will.
this provided the repetition that produced that security she sought.

My wife (then girlfriend) started scooping for me because I had corrective eye surgery and physically couldn't service my clients. This was in my second year in business and I realized two things: I'm gonna marry this woman (because she's literally scooping dog poop for me lol) and that I can delegate the physical labor to someone else.

We both quit our day jobs to focus on our business full time and I always say I wouldn't have as much success as I've had if it wasn't for her. But it's extremely difficult to remove work from our personal life, and I have to constantly remind myself not to bring up work stuff during a date night or dinner.

I think what works is your spouse really needs to buy into the vision and to have a clear separation of responsibilities between the both of you so you aren't crossing wires.

I think (and have experienced in my own marriage) that two realities can co-exist in the same place. Just because my perception doesn't match my husband's, it doesn't negate either of them. I, too, have also offered roles within my organization while my husband built his own company, and felt unsupported and unseen (frustrating, building a business is like having a new baby!)

My best advice (from learned experience) is to over communicate during this transition. Sit down 1:1 and really sort out the family values, the disconnect, and the potential solution so you both feel purposeful and seen. Hope this helps :)

I think communication and patience are huge when it comes to building a business with your spouse. Starting a business can be exciting for the entrepreneur, but for the other person it can sometimes feel like uncertainty, especially when they see the long hours and sacrifices before they see the results.

One thing that can help is bringing them into the vision—not just asking them to help with tasks, but showing them the “why” behind what you’re building and what the future could look like for your family. At the same time, making sure there is a healthy balance between business time and family time is important because your relationships are part of the success too. I respect that you left a career that was burning you out to create something that still allows you to help people. That same passion that pushed you to start your business can be something you share with your spouse. Sometimes people don’t believe in the dream until they can see the plan, the progress, and how they fit into it.

If I could offer one piece of advice - it would be to avoid having your wife help run admin in your business. Thing is, unless she believes in the vision for the business and wants to pour in to it as much as you, it'll turn your dinners in to shop talk and if you have to critique something she's doing, it'll be that much more awkward. This is obviously based off my own experience and advice I've received from mentors so take that for what it's worth. If you choose to involve your wife, my recommendation would be to have a very well thought out job description, duties, with SOPs etc. I wouldn't try to build something with her unless she has experience in that particular area and can bring expertise (like if she's an accountant and does your bookkeeping or something like that). 

Put her in front of the computer, pour her a glass of wine and let her read this honest and 'from the heart' thread. Tell her you don't want her to say anything right now, then go out for 20 mins. Get some take out so no one has to cook dinner, then sit down and ask her to unload all her thoughts on you.

Just wanted to provide my perspective as a wife. I don’t think the question is if she supports your dream but more of does she feels like she is a priority within in.  My husband and I own a handyman business together and I have learned that building a business can easily consume every conversation, every evening, and every weekend if you let it. Before asking how to get your spouse more involved, ask her what support looks like to her she may not want to do admin work. One thing I’ve learned is that not everyone is wired to dream the same dream in the same way. Some spouses are builders, some are encouragers, and some simply want to know the business isn’t replacing the relationship.
