What Marketing Actually Works for Outdoor Service Businesses During Slow Seasons?

I run a small land clearing/brush clearing business in Ohio, and with how wet it’s been in our area lately, things are starting to slow down a bit. I’m trying to be proactive and focus on marketing so I can keep work coming in and continue growing the business.

For those of you who’ve been in a similar spot, what marketing has actually worked best for you to bring in more customers and keep jobs lined up? Facebook ads, Google ads, yard signs, referrals, local networking, something else?

I’d especially love to hear what’s worked well for seasonal or outdoor service businesses when weather starts affecting the schedule. Appreciate any advice or ideas you’re willing to share.

  • Networking is huge! Its all about who you know. The hardest part of landing most commercial jobs is getting to speak to the right person in the first place. Anyways to stay on topic: I joined a local BNI group last year my first year in business and just the referrals I got in that one group alone accounted for a 1/3 of the business I did my first year. I would highly recommend checking out networking groups that could work for you like BNI, Chamber of Commerce, etc. Some cost money, some make you attend a weekly meeting, etc. Other than that my two cents is get a good website with SEO and as you can afford to do so start spending a little in Facebook and some in Google Ads. Between those two you should figure out which one gets you more business after running both for a period of time and then fuel the fire. Last note: I personally think if you have a service business and your halfway decent at what you do the residential side of your business will grow naturally, so I personally would recommend to chase the commercial business and start growing that as fast as you can. Good Luck

I would think someone with a business like that would KILL IT with a membership service or bi-monthly maintenance package or something. I agree social media and doing meta ads could really benefit you. Check out Steve Hunsaker for tips on how to market on facebook. He has a course I did which was awesome also.

  • I always think of marketing as building referral pipelines. Every HOA, Realtor, property manager, contractor, insurance agent, and local business group is a potential long-term customer source. One relationship can lead to dozens of jobs.
