What Do You Do to Consistently Earn Five-Star Reviews?

I've realized that customer service begins long before the first tool comes out.

Quick responses, clear communication, setting expectations, and following through have been just as important as the quality of the work itself.

What is one thing your company does that consistently earns five-star reviews?

We all should know the obvious things. I like to give the surprise discount at the end and asking them to give a review. The ask might be the most important outside of good service. The surprise discount is just icing the cake. Example- if you charge $100 an hour and a job takes 1:40 minutes. Tell them you normally bill by the ¼ hour (assuming you do, I do) charge them 1:30 and they will appreciate it and be more apt to actually take the time to do a review. Feeling like you gave them extra time and it's justified to give a little back.

Jobber's automation for one!! Secondly, we have the staff trained to ask clients who love their work (we have fun little contests each quarter with this!)

Google reviews have played a HUGE part in our growth YoY. It's saved us thousands of dollars in additional advertising spend because organically we have the authority in our region. We had less than 100 reviews as of September 2022, we just cracked 500 last week (with a 4.9 rating!)

For us, five-star service starts with making the customer feel informed and cared for from beginning to end. We respond quickly, explain exactly what to expect, arrive when promised, follow the customer’s instructions, and send a completion message or photo afterward.

The biggest difference, though, is that we try to treat every customer like a person rather than another stop on the route. We never judge the condition of a yard, and we look for small ways to make life easier whenever possible. Customers may hire us for a clean yard, but I believe the kindness, reliability, and peace of mind are what they remember most.

You hit the nail on the head—the work itself is only half of it.

To consistently lock in five stars, I run a simple 3-step process on every single job:

    1. Upfront expectations: Walk the property with the owner before touching a tool. Point out pre-existing issues, explain the process, and establish zero surprises.
    2. Protection & respect: Treat the property better than my own—tape off sensitive areas, manage runoff/overspray, and leave the site cleaner than I found it.
    3. The final walkthrough & real-time ask: Walk the customer through the completed job to ensure they're 100% thrilled before I invoice. Once they give the nod, I send a direct text link right there in the driveway while the fresh results are staring them in the face.

The quality of work earns the five stars, but the walkthrough guarantees satisfaction and the instant text actually gets it posted.

For me, earning five-star reviews starts with treating every customer like they are more than just a job. I focus on communication, showing up when I say I will, paying attention to the small details, and making sure the customer feels valued throughout the entire process.  I’ve learned that people remember the experience just as much as the service itself. A clean job, honesty, and going the extra mile can turn a first-time customer into someone who recommends you to their friends and family. Building trust and a good reputation is one of the biggest investments a small business can make.
