Sales Tax

Hello All,

I am getting ready to bring in a new tax consultant for 2025 for our business but was curious what others do on here that are in the same line of work that we are.

We are located in north east maryland that services MD, PA, and DE (no sales tax).  The tax laws are wickedly confusing for me especially when it comes to lawn applications.  I have heard many different things and hope that my new agency will get it figured out but would appreciate any insight on this.

Thank you in advance and hope everyone has an amazing holiday break coming up!!!

Cheers

Jim

It's a bit unnerving that "tax consultant" can't answer this specific question. Have you thought about hiring a CPA?

My apologies.  I should have said "bringing in a new CPA".  My current CPA simply sent me MD's documents on sales tax laws.  Which inside of those docs I was confused on what is exempt from sales tax and when I asked was just told to "refer to the documents". The new CPA that I am getting ready to use has those services included but was just curious upfront what others were dealing with.

DE does not have a statewide or local consumer sales tax. When shopping in the state, consumers pay the exact listed price on the shelf or menu. However, the state levies a gross receipt tax on sellers for doing business in Delaware.

PA imposes a statewide  sales and use tax of 6% on the retail sale, consumption, or use of tangible personal property and certain services. Local jurisdictions add to this base rate: an additional 1% in Allegheny County and an additional 2% in Philadelphia.

MD applies a straightforward, statewide sales and use tax with no local surtaxes.

General Sales Tax: 6% on most retail goods and taxable services.
Local Taxes: There are 0% local or city sales taxes in Maryland the rate is consistent statewide.
Use Tax: Applies at 6% if you purchase a taxable item out-of-state but use/store it in Maryland and did not pay state sales tax at the time of purchase
Different rates apply to specific goods and services:
      1.Vehicle & RV Rentals: 11.5%
      2.Truck Rentals: 8%
3.Alcoholic Beverages: 9% (both packaged and served for immediate consumption)
      4.Cannabis Products: 12%
      5.Electronic Smoking Devices (Vapes): 20%
      6.Vape Liquids: 60%
      Hope this helps!!

My recommendation would be to consult with a CPA who can help assess the requirements! We have also utilized a QuickBooks coach who was highly knowledgeable in tax requirements.
