Is hiring freelancers for admin work worth it? What's your Take?

Has Anyone Used UpWork to Hire Affordable Freelancers for Admin Work/other jobs?

I’m curious if anyone here has used UpWork to hire low‑cost freelancers for administrative tasks in their business. A few friends have recommended it for things like scheduling, data entry, inbox management, and other behind‑the‑scenes work — but I’ve never tried it myself.

Before I dive in, I wanted to see what this group thinks. Have you used UpWork for admin help? Was it worth it? Any tips, red flags, or success stories?

Appreciate any insight from those who’ve been down this road.

  • It can definitely be beneficial! My biggest tip is to be super clear on what tasks you want done. Some admin tasks can be automated, while others might need a personal touch. For instance, AI can help with scheduling or data entry, while a service like AnswerConnect can handle calls with a script that makes you sound like a bigger operation. In short, break down what you need: find a VA for the tasks that need that human finesse, and let automation do the rest!

I haven't used UPWORK, but I did hire a virtual assistant that helps with admi work and job dispatching. You definitely have to interview and train to find the right fit. My VA has taken about a year of on and off training to learn what I need and how I need it done and to understand the processes efficiently. I can say it has been the best investment I have ever done. Now that he has learned more confidence in the processes and decision making, my VA has taken over 75% of the admin work that I was carrying. Which has allowed me to work on the business by strengthening our processes and systems and going out to get more jobs, etc.
