When I'm bringing someone onto the team, I look for people who will represent the business exactly how I would. In this line of work, your reputation is everything, and you can't afford to hire people you have to babysit.
Here are the main things that matter to me:
- Strong Work Ethic: I need self-starters who take ownership of the job and don't need someone standing over their shoulder to make sure the work is getting done right.
- Absolute Reliability: Showing up on time and doing what you say you're going to do is non-negotiable. If you're late, it makes the whole operation look unprofessional.
- Integrity and Respect: We work on people's private property and around their homes. I need to know without a doubt that you’ll treat every client and property with total respect, and that you'll own up to a mistake immediately if something happens.
- Attention to Detail: The difference between a mediocre job and a great job is always in the details. I want guys who take real pride in the final product and notice the small stuff.
- Willingness to Learn: Direct experience is great, but having a solid mechanical aptitude and the right attitude is just as valuable. I can teach you the trade, but I can't teach you to care.
If someone has the right work ethic, absolute reliability, and high integrity, everything else can be dialed in on the job.
