Google Tag site traffic tracking

Has anyone found a reasonable way to capture site traffic data without the ability to leverage Google Tags?

  • Hey, how's it going? You can absolutely bypass the whole Google Tag headache. A lot of service businesses are moving away from them because the setup is a total frustration and it's complete overkill for what we actually need to see.

If your platform is locked down or you just don't want to deal with Google's mess, here are the two easiest ways to get your numbers:

    • Plausible or Fathom Analytics: These are simple, lightweight alternatives. Instead of a massive tag manager, you just paste one tiny, single line of code into your website's header and you're done. It gives you a clean, one-page dashboard with just the numbers that matter—like how many people showed up, where they came from, and what pages they clicked—without dragging down your site speed.
    • Your Web Hosting Server Logs: If you literally cannot add any tracking code to the site at all, log into your website hosting account (GoDaddy, HostGator, cPanel, etc.). Your server automatically tracks every single click in the background anyway. Look for a free, built-in tool called Awstats. It will show you your traffic numbers for free without touching a single piece of website code.

If you don't have the ability or the desire to mess around with Google Tags, those two options will give you the exact visibility you need without the hassle. Hope the relieves your frustration!!!

Thank you! The challenge I have is that my site is a Jobber hosted site. Can these same options be applied? If not, I'm looking at an independent web designer and will absolutely apply one of these suggestions. I appreciate the comment!!

Since you're on a Jobber-hosted site, here are three things you can do right inside your dashboard to get your traffic and lead numbers:

      • Use Jobber's Lead Tracking Links: In your settings under Requests, Jobber gives you unique booking links specifically for Facebook, Instagram, Google Business, and Yelp. If you use those exact links on your profiles, Jobber automatically tracks and tags every single request with the exact source.
      • Turn on the Lead Source Field: Make sure the "How did you hear about us?" field is active on your booking forms. It feeds straight into your Jobber Reports under the "Revenue by Lead Source" chart. It’s simple, but it gives you concrete data on exactly which marketing channels are actually putting money in your pocket.
      • Keep an eye on Jobber Insights: Your internal Reports tab already does a killer job of tracking request-to-quote conversion rates and client activity, which is honestly the data that matters most for a service business anyway.

Jobber keeps the back end locked down for security and simplicity, which is a good thing for keeping the site running fast. Give those internal tracking features a shot first—you might find you don't even need to mess with an outside designer or Google Tags at all!

Well I'm not a big fan of Google. Without tags it's impossible to pull useful data about site traffic and the pricing mechanism is absolutely criminal. I've got the suggestions you mention activated and I want more insight. I'll likely move but my subscription is in place for 2026 so I'm trying to maximize the tool while I'm using it.

  • That's a great question. I'm interested in this too because understanding where website traffic comes from seems really important for making smart marketing decisions. I'm still learning about website analytics, so I'm looking forward to seeing what tools or alternatives others recommend if Google Tags isn't an option. Thanks for asking this!
