SibiFirewood, the time you spend helping customers choose is worth protecting. A small trial with your own callers could help you see whether an assistant makes reaching you easier.
If you’re still considering it, I’d try after-hours only for two weeks, with a short greeting that clearly identifies the automated assistant and offers a callback from you. Then ask customers on that callback: “Was it easy to leave what you needed, and was anything frustrating?”
Keep a simple count of callers who leave usable details, ask for a person, or hang up without leaving anything. Compare that with your current voicemail results. An answered call by itself doesn’t tell you whether the experience worked.
For firewood, I’d also test a caller who doesn’t know how much wood to order. The assistant should be able to pass that question to you without forcing them to choose a quantity just to request a callback. That leaves room for the conversation and advice your customers value.
