What tools do service professionals carry every day beyond their main equipment?
I’m not just referring to the basic tools of the trade. Every Day Carries (EDC) are those essential items you simply can’t do without. I always ensure I have my wallet filled with business cards, my cellphone, sunglasses, Felco pruners, a Leatherman multitool, a reliable folding knife, a working pen, a notepad, a small flashlight, and an irrigation adjustment tool. There have been so many moments while I’m out providing quotes where my EDC items truly help seal the deal. For instance, if I’m walking a property for a landscape maintenance job and I spot a broken branch on a Linden, I can quickly pull out my pruners to snip it off. Or if I see that a corner of a lawn is looking a bit dry, I can take just a couple of minutes to adjust an irrigation head. Potential customers really appreciate noticing your attention to detail and your proactive approach to caring for their property, even before you finalize a contract! What do you carry on your person every time you leave the house/business?299Views2likes4CommentsYou Quit Your Job to Start a Business — So Why Gamble on a Used Truck?
Everybody says the same thing: “Just buy a used truck, it’s cheaper.” Yet, That same truck breaks down 3–6 months later. Now your jobs are delayed. You’re borrowing vehicles from your spouse or rental. You’re stressed out and behind on bills. And suddenly the “cheaper option” is costing you way more. Here's my personal take: You quit your job ... You are betting 100% on yourself, to care for your livelihood. If you’re betting your whole future on this business — why risk it with a vehicle that might leave you stranded? I hate blaming others, or the lack of accountability. So if I can control one variable — like my ability to show up to the job, that will pay me for my services... I’m going to do it. But that's just my opinion. My hot take, What do you all think? I created this visual for myself to follow and share whenever anyone is deciding to get a vehicle.229Views1like4CommentsIs anyone finding it hard to get a cap cover for their pickup?
I have been looking into getting a cover for the bed of my truck and a lot of places here in Toronto are saying their inventory is gone! And it will likely be a year before any new ones come in. Even used ones are being bought up for resale or even modified to fit the more popular trucks. Has anyone been looking for one and found the same supply issues?94Views0likes1CommentWhat's one Jobber feature you wish you had started using sooner?
I've been exploring how different home service businesses use Jobber, and it's interesting that two companies can use the same software in completely different ways. What's one feature, workflow, or habit that made you think: "I wish I'd known about this six months ago." Whether it's scheduling, quoting, invoicing, client communication, reminders, or something else, I'd love to hear what's made the biggest difference for your business. Hopefully this thread helps newer members discover some hidden gems too.43Views0likes6CommentsWhat Equipment Should a Small Landscaping Business Invest in First When Starting Out?
Hi everyone! One thing I’ve committed to since starting Mowing With A Purpose Landscaping is reinvesting back into my business whenever I can. Recently, I was able to get my Ferris back up and running, which was a huge win. Along the way, I’ve also been building out my Echo PAS-225 system with attachments like the edger, blower, tiller/cultivator, chainsaw, and pole saw. Having one powerhead with multiple attachments has been a great way to expand the services I can offer while keeping costs manageable. I also recently purchased a Gravely mower, and now I’m trying to decide how to best use both machines. Would you: Make the newer Gravely your primary mower and keep the Ferris as a backup? Continue running the Ferris as your main workhorse and save the Gravely for backup? Rotate both throughout the week to balance wear and tear? I’d also love to hear what equipment has been the biggest game-changer for your business. If you could recommend one piece of equipment every landscaper should invest in early, what would it be and why? I’m always looking to learn from those who’ve been in the industry longer.
