Need advice on scaling

Hi everyone need some advice. The phone has been ringing off the hook and I just can’t keep up with all the work coming my way. I’m a small one man operation and full time firefighter looking to add a couple guys to my operation.
any tips would help on how to properly go about expanding. Thank you guys!

  • Just a word of advice. When hiring people, do not take their word on skill sets. Do your due diligence to check their qualifications. Otherwise, you might find yourself re-doing their work. Try to work alongside of them until you are comfortable with their level of skill. Another tip is to use existing subcontractors that have a good reputation in your line of business. Good luck with your expansion.

As for the sub contractors do mean just when needed?

Yes. The great thing about sub-contracting is you can use them only when a need arises. Building relationships with great sub-contractors can elevate one's business. Once you establish the sub-contractor relationship, you know you can count on them to perform thus relieving your anxiety and stress level. I like what Judith said about core values. It is important that your subs have the same understanding as yourself thereby when they are on the job, you are on the job. Hope this helps.

  • This is super exciting.  Make sure you know your core values and hire based on this.  It also sounds like that if you have a full time job and you still want to keep this job, hire someone who is more like a right hand to you.  More than happy to chat if you need help.

    Simple systems, create successful businesses.
Leverage technology and implement your systems. I would also suggest building out a business plan and org chart. Always happy to hop on a quick call of I can help in anyway.

Welcome brother! I am a former FT FF/PM now running my company full time as a tradesman. You are going to need someone you can trust for those days where you are on shift. You need to be able to rely on them when you're unavailable to make the right decisions when needed. Fortunately, there are trustworthy personnel in our profession who are always looking for a side hustle, so they may be able to get you through busy times. I was fortunate with a 24/72 shift and able to line up buddies to help me out. Finding that "right hand man" is going to take some time but will be worth it. Be sure to take care of them as an employer and you will be fine. Good luck and stay safe!
