Sincerely, a lot of great companies in this space are losing work not because of their skills but because the business side isn't keeping up. Here's what I've seen actually work.
- Google Business Profile
Most competitors set it up once and never touch it again. Post job photos, respond to every review, and keep it active. It's free and it works better than most paid ads for local searches. - Follow up after every job
A simple text after the job, reminding them when their next pump-out is due, goes a long way. Most companies never do this. It keeps you top of mind and brings in referrals without any extra effort. - Get in front of realtors and inspectors
These people are constantly referring septic work. One solid relationship with a realtor can send you 20-plus jobs a year. Show up, introduce yourself, stay in touch. It's low effort with serious payoff. - Stop competing on price; compete on trust
Homeowners don't want the cheapest option. They want someone they trust. A clean website, clear communication, and before-and-after photos will win you more jobs than undercutting ever will. - Get your operations tight
The businesses growing fastest aren't necessarily the biggest. They're just running cleaner. Quotes go out fast, jobs are scheduled properly, and customers hear back quickly. That alone sets you apart from most of the competition.
The market being competitive is actually a good thing if you're running your business well. Most of your competitors aren't. That's the opportunity.
