How do you handle clients who ask for "ballpark" pricing over the phone?

Hey community! Quick operational question.

When a lead calls in or messages asking for a quick price before you can get photos or property measurements, how do you handle it? Do you give a wide range to filter them out, or do you strictly hold out until you have photos/measurements in hand?

Curious to see how different shops handle the balance between speed and accuracy.

We give a range, but only after two or three qualifying questions: square footage or lot size, condition/last time it was serviced, and access issues like stairs, gates, or parking. Without those the number is a guess and the guess always lands low. The phrasing that works for us is "most homes like that land between X and Y, and I can confirm once I see photos or walk it." That anchors expectations, filters out the people who wanted a $79 miracle, and still leaves room to price the real scope. We also make the range wide enough that we never have to walk it back upward, since revising a quote up costs far more trust than starting a bit higher.
