I started a handyman business - primarily working on thumbtack. I charged a cheap rate till I got enough reviews to warrant an increase in price. I did this on my own for a year till I started getting busy enough to bring other people on.
If I had to do it all over again I would do something a lot more simple. This will make things easier when your company gets bigger. I've heard quite a few podcasts about picking up dog poop. Sounds gross but it's pretty scalable I think.
The problem with being a handyman is your going to eventually take a job or two you shouldn't, and then you'll have to make it right. A more simple service would have probably avoided a lot of those head aches.
Hi Laura! Starting with the right "backend" is the best move you can make. Most owners wait until they are burnt out to automate. We are building an "Automation Starter Kit" for Jobber users that handles the sync and reporting from day one, so you can focus on growth instead of data entry. If you want to see how to set up your workflow for scale, I’d love to show you what we are building.
