The First Impression: What Makes Someone Choose Your Business?

Before a customer ever hires you, they’re already judging your business through your website, reviews, social media, phone calls, and communication.

What’s one thing you believe helps turn a potential customer into a paying customer?

  • Reviews and referrals are by far the highest attraction for a business. Next I believe is a presence that educates, informs and sometimes entertains that will draw people to you. Then it’s up to you as an owner to follow up - constantly, - offer value before and after the job is done. At that point it’s how you treat your client. Did you do what you said you would, provide the value and service to your standards (and to their expectations.) Then it’s about ownership of mindshare and maintaining it enough so if they hear someone looking for what you do, they immediately think of you.

  • In my experience, the biggest factor is trust. Most customers compare several businesses before making a decision, and they usually look for signs that the company is reliable rather than just the lowest price.

A clear website, genuine customer reviews, fast responses, and transparent communication all help create a strong first impression. I also think it's important to explain the process upfront so customers know what to expect before they book.

Even small details like answering questions clearly, showing before-and-after examples when appropriate, and following up promptly can make a business stand out. People remember how easy and professional the experience felt.

I couldn't agree more. Trust is what turns a quote into a customer. People want to feel confident they're hiring someone who will communicate well, show up, and deliver on their promises. A great experience is often what brings them back and earns those word-of-mouth referrals.

Well said. I especially like your point about owning mindshare. Getting the job is one thing, but staying top of mind is what leads to repeat customers and referrals. Consistently providing value and following through on your promises is what turns a one-time client into a long-term advocate.

For me, it comes down to trust and speed. Responding quickly with clear, honest communication and having recent before-and-after photos on your profile shows them you're reliable before you even step foot on the property. When you make it easy and hassle-free for them to get answers, they stop shopping around.

I like that especially the point about making it easy for the customer. People appreciate businesses that are responsive, transparent, and confident in their work. A smooth experience from the first interaction can make all the difference.
