What marketing channel works best for you right now???

Hello,

We are currently evaluating our marketing strategy to improve lead consistency and build deeper community trust. While we currently use Yelp, we find the results inconsistent and often attract price-shoppers rather than long-term clients. :(

Moving forward, I would like to pivot our focus toward community-based marketing, such as sponsoring local schools and Little League teams. These sponsorships build the kind of long-term goodwill and trust that ensures local homeowners think of us first during emergencies.

To clarify our strategy, we are avoiding the following channels:

  - Lead Aggregators (Angi, Networx, HomeAdvisor): These platforms sell the same lead to multiple contractors. The requirement to respond within seconds to avoid losing the job—while still being charged—does not align with our workflow.
  - Yelp for Major Projects: Due to high cost-per-click metrics and a high volume of price-sensitive inquiries, we find this to be a low-return channel for larger plumbing jobs.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Plumbers,

We leverage some marketing in our business but 80% of our business seems to come from referrals and word of mouth. Treat your customers as nicely as possible and be fair! Thats the script that seems to work for us!

Thank you! That's what has grown us the most honestly since we started. I agree it seems to be the best way to earn long standing clients.

  • Those are great ideas.  Depending how much you want to grow and what are are you in. We do google ads and works well.  We also do a lot of different advertising including social media, door knockers, digital media.

Thank you! I was wanting to try more social media work and community events! That sounds like a lot of fun not only for us but the community!

  • One thing I’ve noticed though: community marketing works best when it’s paired with something that keeps you “visible in the moment.” For us, that meant staying consistent with Google Business Profile updates, reviews, and occasional local search ads even while building out sponsorships. Otherwise, there can be a gap between goodwill and actual inbound calls.

That makes a lot of sense; We are working more on out online presence mostly with the google reviews. We are lacking on the google review but Yelp we are doing pretty good.

We've had the best results from building relationships in our local community rather than chasing leads.

For us, word-of-mouth, Google reviews, referrals, and being visible where we live and work have consistently outperformed paid lead platforms. We sponsor local youth sports, support schools and community organizations, and stay active in neighborhood Facebook groups. It doesn't generate leads overnight, but it builds trust, and that's what drives quality calls.

We've also learned that educating homeowners on social media has been surprisingly effective. Instead of constantly advertising, we post real jobs, explain common HVAC issues, and show how we diagnose problems. That transparency has helped people feel like they know us before they ever call.

Like you, we've moved away from lead aggregators. Competing against five or six contractors for the same lead, while paying for the opportunity, just wasn't a good return on investment for our business. We found many of those leads were shopping strictly on price.

Our focus now is simple: invest in our reputation, be involved in the community, ask every satisfied customer for a Google review, and let referrals compound over time. It has produced fewer tire-kickers and more customers who already trust us before we walk through the door.

Exactly! We were focusing more on work of mouth and referral because that's how we grew so much. We will need to work more on our google presence though as we haven't really dove into that. We have be utilizing Yelp more so since we started but are ready to expand a little now that we have our footing.
