Referral Feature - Choosing incentive structure

What incentive option are you all finding works best; percentage-based vs. set dollar amount?

I'm curious about what others are doing to spread the word about this new referral system to existing clients and prospective clients (aside from the email campaigns within Jobber)

  • I don’t have any data since I just enabled it for myself. I think 10-15% is a good place to start.

  • So I think it depends on yours jobs and how much your average job is. We decided to go with $10 off for every referral because that is smarted for us, and keeps more profit in the business. We think that this is a good concrete choice that our clients will understand and see the value in as well.

We just started it as well, so I am not sure, but i imagine our B2B ‘s are going to be taking advantage of this the most- they know they are going to have jobs in the future that this will be applied to and would be helpful for.

For spreading the word, we are going to use the Campaign feature. I wasn’t sure at first because I thought that there wasn’t a good way to make sure we are only sending this out to the people that we want to offer this to. But we found a way to do it. We are going to tag our clients that we don’t want to do that referral program with “no referral program” (i know, original). And then when you go to send out the campaign, you can say everyone except a certain tag.

I like the method of sending to tagged clients. We recently found out that in the client hub, the "refer a friend" button displays their referral link. Aside from this and campaigns, I don't see another way to retrieve links for specific clients.

Here is a sample post I put together for social media; to market the referral feature

Haven't tried out the feature yet, but was curious about it since it's a thing that I was thinking about implementing.

In my line of business (Stairs and Railings) where there are no return visits and all jobs are one and done, I don't think that a lot of people would use this feature.

If i change my mind about it I would probably offer $100 for a referral and do more for the jobs that are bigger. Let's be honest $10-$50 is not that much for a stair job that will land you a $2500.

Hey Art, I can understand your perspective. Referrals in a one-and-done business like stairs and railings might be trickier to incentivize. Offering $100 per referral sounds like a good start! Have you considered any other ways to encourage referrals? Maybe rewarding the referrer with a discount on future services or gift cards?

  • I just rolled mine out and I set mine up with a set dollar amount. I also don't have data really testing that structure much less the percentage. My personal feeling is that a set dollar amount and letting the client redeem partial or all of it at once is the what I like theoretically. Limiting the client to only one credit per visit/job just seems like it bogs down their experience and adds friction when we should be positively rewarding them for promoting out business in a way that leads to closed and paid jobs. They're already limited by the fact that the referral has to get all the way to the paid invoice to get their credit. I think that is a really great feature of the referral program and it should work that way. I just don't want to put extra tight limitations on them and dissuade them from referring.

  • My recommendation would be similar to promos - provide the highest number to the client. Typically a set dollar amount sounds better than a percentage because the dollar amount is a higher number. Hope this helps!
