When hiring employees, I look for reliability, honesty, and a willingness to learn above everything else. Technical skills can be taught, but a strong work ethic and positive attitude are much harder to develop.
Some of the qualities I value most include:
- Dependability – Showing up on time and following through on commitments.
- Integrity – Being trustworthy, especially when working in customers' homes and businesses.
- Problem-Solving Skills – The ability to think critically and find solutions when unexpected challenges arise.
- Customer Service Skills – Communicating professionally and treating customers with respect.
- Attention to Detail – Small mistakes can have significant consequences, so accuracy matters.
- Adaptability – Being willing to learn new technologies, tools, and procedures as the industry evolves.
- Team-Oriented Mindset – Working well with others and contributing to the success of the business as a whole.
I believe the best employees are those who take pride in their work, continuously seek improvement, and genuinely care about helping customers.

I agree 100%. Looking for the values you can't really teach someone are most important to me. I can teach someone how to refill a bait station, or apply a perimeter spray to a house, fill a hole...I have had trouble teaching someone how to show up on time, be trustworthy, be dependable. Those are the qualities I look for.

I completely agree with you. Technical skills can often be taught through training and experience, but qualities like reliability, integrity, and accountability and much harder to instill. Showing up consistently, being dependable, and taking ownership of your work are traits that makes a lasting impact on any team.

Well said!! We share a similar mindset. Dependability, integrity, and a positive attitude are some of the biggest factors we look for. Technical skills are important, but a strong work ethic and willingness to learn often determine long-term success. As a small business owner, I look for employees who are dependable, safety-conscious, take pride in their work, and treat customers' homes with respect. A great attitude, accountability, and the desire to keep improving are qualities that help build a strong team culture.

Depends on the role, Ideally someone who cares enough to get to the next level but not step on my toes.

That's a great point. The role definitely influences what qualities are most important. I also value people who are motivated to grow professionally, take initiative, and strive for improvement while remaining collaborative and supportive of the team.

Because we are built around quality products, we focus on training. Therefore our candidates must have *positive attitude and be teachable. There are so many great qualities that follow a person that has those two characteristics. We then mold them through consistency, feedback, training, and clarity.

I agree with this perspective. A positive attitude and willingness to learn can go a long way. When someone is coachable and open for feedback, it creates opportunities for growth, consistency, and long-term success for both the employee and the company.

My business is just beginning to grow and we are looking to hire an apprentice. The comments here are helpful. I really need someone who is willing to learn, shows up everyday, and can speak with customers without offending them.

Congratulations on your growth! I agree that finding someone who is eager to learn, dependable, and able to communicate respectfully with customers can make a huge difference. Those interpersonal skills often become just as valuable as technical abilities over time.

When I'm bringing someone onto the team, I look for people who will represent the business exactly how I would. In this line of work, your reputation is everything, and you can't afford to hire people you have to babysit.
Here are the main things that matter to me:
- Strong Work Ethic: I need self-starters who take ownership of the job and don't need someone standing over their shoulder to make sure the work is getting done right.
- Absolute Reliability: Showing up on time and doing what you say you're going to do is non-negotiable. If you're late, it makes the whole operation look unprofessional.
- Integrity and Respect: We work on people's private property and around their homes. I need to know without a doubt that you’ll treat every client and property with total respect, and that you'll own up to a mistake immediately if something happens.
- Attention to Detail: The difference between a mediocre job and a great job is always in the details. I want guys who take real pride in the final product and notice the small stuff.
- Willingness to Learn: Direct experience is great, but having a solid mechanical aptitude and the right attitude is just as valuable. I can teach you the trade, but I can't teach you to care.
If someone has the right work ethic, absolute reliability, and high integrity, everything else can be dialed in on the job.
