Is posting on Craigslist and OfferUp worth it for a new home service business?

Is it worth the time and effort to use these type of sites or will it bring in jobs that are cheap and nasty.

  • I got started on Craigslist with my mobile mechanic business. This was back in 2006 though, and it was free to post at that time. Now there arent nearly as many people on there, and the customers even back then seemed to be not as good quality as from Google. I think Facebook is better.

I consider Craiglist as another channel of digital media so as long as you have a way to filter through garbage with your intake process (qualifying questions, requiring deposits etc) then it's not a bad idea to post there. But with your line of work I think before/after pictures and videos of you doing the work could be more effective on other channels like Facebook/IG

Thank you. Ya ive never really been a computer guy until now. So I was curious if the jobs were more on the cheap can't afford to call a real company type thing or if it could be a good revenue source

I find Nextdoor to mostly be people looking for the cheapest price, Not so much legit companies. May just be my market and the same with Facebook.

It's not even that great for hiring. I wouldn't pay for it.

  • Craigslist can work amazingly well - but only on a promoted post and only when you frame it correctly.  I've been marketing for 20 years - mostly in the trades - and I know things.  I know so many things that I've actually had small operators like you say "TURN IT OFF! I'm too busy" - so here's some advice!

Tell a story that resonates - but lead with the offer - be specific.  Hit a pain point.  "Mobile Brake Service You Can Afford - Indepedent Mechanic" - Tell a story like "After 10 years in the shop and getting let down, worked hard, and underappreciate - i've decided to go indepdent as a Mobile Mechanic - this will allow me to spend more time with my 5 year old and be more flexible while his mom works a crazy schedule as a nurse.  I'd love handle your brake repair needs or just diagnose that problem you've been worried about."  then state clearly the estimated price range - your availability - your service area.  give  aCLEAR call to action "Click here to message me or schedule" - and make sure you are using a CRM like mine that automatically acknowledges leads and starts the process IMMEDIATELY - not tomorrow - right away.   Including a picture of yourself and you working really really helps!  Have at least a FB/IG - that has posts.  Let me know if you need advise!
