How Do Solo Operators Find Reliable On-Call Help When Jobs Get Too Big to Handle Alone?
I would like a better way to keep track of my time. Since I ran in one person operation with occasional aside helper, I sometimes get overloaded with jobs. I think I can do. As a small one person handyman type jobs. I may get out on a job and find its way too much for one person and then I have to stop and try to find someone to help me. So I’ve tried using workers day workers and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. But whatever I’m looking for as far as parts, I know I can go to Home Depot and find what I need so I always depend on Home Depot and now I just need a way to find a reliable worker that is willing to be on call. When most calls you get are somewhat of an emergency, how do you handle that!?
I own and operate a pest control business, and anyone who has ever needed to call pest control, they typically want you there right away! I am sure there are other companies that operate under the same stress, and I wonder how they manage those calls that come in during a planned out day? Or calls that come in at the end of the day. Calls that come in on a Friday afternoon. Calls that come in during a busy week! What Should Home Service Businesses Automate First to Save Time?
Small manual tasks start stacking up, catching up on follow-ups, re-adjusting scheduling, invoicing, review requests, the list goes on and on. Sound familiar? What’s one task you’re still doing manually that you know could be automated? What’s stopping you from setting it up?Are You Building a Business or Just Creating Yourself Another Job?
It’s easy as a small business owner to get caught up doing everything yourself. At what point do you start delegating, hiring, or putting systems in place so the business can operate without you being involved in every job? I’d love to hear how other owners are making that transition while still keeping quality and customer service high. Those who charge for inspections, do you have a flat rate or does it depend on the property?
I recently got a request for a rodent assessment for a house that is about 10,000 sqft, an absolute monster of a house with 6 levels, a 4 car garage (buddy has a McLaren 750S, Porsche 917, Ford GT and a Range Rover!!!), vehicle lifts, elevator, separate chef kitchen, indoor pool...the works! I told the homeowner my standard fee for a more modest sized house, and that I would have to triple that to be able to spend the time at their home and not feel rushed. They did agree and made no issue out of it but it did make me wonder how other people approach this. Then I found the issue areas and they were about 3-4 times as many as a regular house and the cost reflected that. More doors, vents, cracks, holes, utility lines...it was insane. Should I have kept the inspection charge the same knowing I would find many many more holes or was it smart to up the inspection charge?
