Where do you find good quality candidates?

I am going to be starting to look to hire someone and I am wondering what platforms other people are using to find good quality candidates?

  • We use Indeed as a platform and Zoho Recruiting to manage the candidates.  As a small business coach this question always comes up and the comment that Indeed does not work well.   I like to encourage everyone if they use any platform for hiring is that they will get results if they put in the work of selecting and communicating with the candidates.  There will be a lot of applicants in there that will not match your criteria. For reference per ad we usually get about 400 applicants. More than half we don't even see because of our qualifying questions - basically they do not qualify.  We send questions to them and they have 48 hours to respond. We here maybe corresponding with only about 75 candidates.  If they don't respond they are disqualified.  If they answer and we like them then they get invited to a video interview that they can do on their own at any time.  If they don't do it within 48 hours, again they are disquaified.  For video interviews we maybe have about 30.  Once we review the video and we like them they will get invited to an in person interview.  We interview about 10.  It seems leghty but it gives us good results.

I can imagine finding and hiring pest control techs being a bit more difficult than, let's say, lawn care or cleaning. 🤔

Other than the usual suggestions like job boards and social media (which are great to start with), I would look into local FB groups, community networking groups (someone's son or daughter might be interested in this career path, you never know!), and technical programs/colleges that offer pesticide certification programs and see if you can partner with them for student referrals.

Going to tag a few pest control members to see if they can chime in with their insights!

  • My recommendation:

Start with LinkedIn + selective job boards, then use Upwork as a secondary pool if you need volume or want to trial someone first.

I've had some luck on zip recruiter. You just have to be careful to not leave the job open for too long because they charge you per job posting. Also, in your posting, make sure to ask them to do a lot, not just submit a resume. For us, we ask for 3 pictures of their work and if they don't submit them I don't pass them along. My goal is to make the application process take a little longer so the most interested candidates are the ones i'm spending time on.

  • I like the idea of putting a candidate through some harder work to weed out the not interested ones. Thanks for that, I didn't even think about it.

  • I need to be better about jumping on here... sorry for the delay and thank you Julie for tagging me in this.

The short answer is you have likely already met 5 great new team members in the pat week.

I don't like using job platforms because they are just looking for a job. If you want good employees, they need to fit your company culture. You cant determine that from a CV or resume.

Pay attention to the people you interact with on your route. Who is curious about your work? Who has those soft skills that are so very hard to come by?

Let's be honest, you don't need a masters degree to run a GPC route. We can train the technical, the science, the regulations... whats harder to train is the skills that make good employees. Your next tech, admin, manager, and even VP are in your daily route, social media audience, or even your client list. You just need to look for them and you will find them. I did.
